How do acupressure mats work?
Although its name tells you, I’m going to clarify this a tad. Acupressure’s simple principle is to relieve pain and energize the body by thrusting sharp little spikes into your skin. This is also called the Shiatsu massage, used by doctors in the ancient far-east.
These spikes induce increased blood flow where treatment is applied resulting in relief of muscle tension and pain. Increased blood flow will also have a soothing effect and will make you relax like never before, I can assure you about that.
The point of this calming massage is to make you able to achieve the deep sleeping phase. Deep sleep heals you faster and has a positive effect on your immune system resulting in an efficient alleviation of pain.
Something to point out as well is that in spite of rumors being told about the Spoonk Acupressure mat, it really does not hurt.
I won’t say it’s comfortable at first try, but after 5 minutes, you’ll get used to the spiky feeling. And if you manage to survive those 5 minutes, believe me you’ll experience euphoria unleashed.
This mat is GREAT!! Once you can get past the painful few minutes, it def does the job extremely well! I recommend it to anyone with back pains or problems sleeping. An Amazon.com customer
What’s in the Spoonk box?
Out of the box, there come the mat itself and a travel pouch.
There is a slight misunderstanding about the mat featuring an additional pillow. Actually, it is not. There’s solely the acupressure mat packed carefully in its travel bag.
The heart of the whole system are – of course – the 6120 stimulation points made of high quality, non-toxic, hypoallergenic ABS plastic. Spikes are approximately 1/4 inches long, equally spread on the 220 pieces of plastic discs.
And what makes this relaxation mat more inviting? It’s made of certified organic textile (GOTS-certified) and the foam inside it is free from toxic flame retardants. Not to mention the fact that it’s made in the USA.
Since I consider myself an environmentally conscious person, I value when a manufacturer cares about the future of our planet. Spoonk uses VPF technology in foam production which has zero emission.
You can get the mat in three different colors: magenta, navy and pagoda blue. They’re all totally the same if you might ask, and neither of the color variations feature any plus addition to the basic package. You can stick with the color of your liking, since they’re all identical:
In terms of dimensions, the Spoonk acupressure mat has quite a convenient size of 26.6” x 15.7”. It makes it easy to put it on almost any kind of surface and for most, it reaches from the neck to the bottom.
What type of pain does it work for?
Although I heartily recommend this mat for anyone who regularly has lower back pain, neck pain, or anyone who has sleep disorders. Why sleep disorders? I’ll discuss that in a second.
The main illnesses it addresses:
- Chronic back pain (yes, even chronic pain)
- Tight back or neck muscles
- Herniated disc related aches
- Migraines and headaches
- Shoulder pain
Each is self-explanatory I guess, maybe insomnia needs a little bit of clarification. If you have sleep disorders besides your aching back, the Spoonk mat is able to do wonders to you, I’m sure.
Making you relax so much that you can easily reach deep sleep after a late evening treatment, the Spoonk can be the number one aid to insomniacs too.
How to use Spoonk mat? Does the spoonk mat work?
You can literally choose almost any surface to be used with the Spoonk mat. If you’re a first-timer, I suggest you to try it on a flat, firm surface.
After some treatment sessions, feel free to try the mat in your bed, because after attaining total relaxation phase, you can simply roll down to the side, and put the mat on the ground.
Also, take note that the Spoonk Acupressure mat will have an improved effect on your body if you use it with bare skin. I suggest you to start with a thin shirt equipped and get rid of it while the next occasion.
Before going to bed:
- Sit in at the end of the mat, and slowly let down on it by using your ankles for support. Now take big deep breaths and try not to concentrate on initial pain caused by tiny spikes.
- Stay there and relax for 10 – 20 minutes and gradually increase treatment time to 30 – 40 minutes for the best effect.
- As you reach a deeper level of relaxation, you’re ready to remove the mat and get into your bed to let deep sleep invigorate your body throughout the night.
I advise you to try the mat also:
- After workout
- Before & after yoga exercises
- Right after getting out of bed for a mere 10 minutes
- For foot massage (stand on it, but wear socks)
As soon as you’re done, and might want to give a rinse to our spiky fellow, be sure to wash it with hands only. Remove the foam from the cotton cover, do a warm wash with mild detergent. Do not use a tumble dryer or iron afterwards, because the coating might shrink.
When NOT to use the Spoonk mat:
- If you’re pregnant
- Have unregulated high pressure
- Suffer from any bleeding disorders
- Have any kind of neuropathology
- If you’re on a blood-thinning medication
- Suffer of any kind of skin inflammation or infection
Weaker points of the Spoonk Acupressure mat
There’s nothing that substantial to complain about here. As I mentioned before the mat has a slight ‘learning curve’. Speaking of which, you need to get used to the spikes and that particular tingling sense as well.
What also deserves a word is the fact that like many other back pain relief products, the Spoonk Acupressure mat won’t have the same effect on everyone either.
Since all of us come from a different background, and with different attributes, you might not achieve that outstanding pain relief effect, or at least not instantly.
Good news is though that Spoonk provides a 30-day money-back guarantee so if you’re not satisfied at all, you can return it and ask for a refund. Also, there’s a 5-year warranty after that.
Spoonk has proved that developing a quality, efficient pain relief product in the lower price range is possible.
Visiting your chiropractor is also a costly thing, and you can get one Spoonk mat for the price of literally one treatment. Since it’s even risk free to invest in one, I wouldn’t hesitate.
Whether you’re a chronic back pain sufferer, or you have milder back aches, the Spoonk Acupressure massage mat can be a real aid.
