If you’ve already experienced that typical out-of-the-bed type lower back pain, then probably this is why you’ve stumbled upon our selection of best pillows for lower back pain list.

If you’re lucky enough, buying one of these pillows will cause alleviation after a few nights’ sleep, but of course, it’s different, if you’re suffering from a more complicated back issue (e.g. kyphosis, sciatica.) If that’s the case, you’ll presumably need a more complex treatment than just back pain pillows.

Anyway.

We’ve selected the following regular-sized pillows throughout extensive research and of course based on our previous experience.

In this guide, you’ll solely read about normal size pillows and shortly we’ll release one for full body pillows as well. Thing is, we wanted to make sure that even those on a low budget can start out to relieve their back pain. Ultimately, these are way cheaper than full body pillows and still can get you to a way better level.

Also, note that these pillows are both for side sleepers (come on, who isn’t a slide sleeper, at least occasionally?) and back sleepers as well. They’re all intended to relieve lower back pain due to the misalignment of your hips, which usually occur while night.

If you’re ready, so are we. Let’s see which orthopedic pillow for lower back pain is the best for you in 2017.

If you’re in a hurry: Take a glance at the table below where we sum up all the products listed with pros and cons.

ComfiLife Orthopedic Knee Pillow

The ComfiLife Orthopedic Knee Pillow wasn’t designed to rest your head on, instead (as the name says) it’s a pillow to put your knees in level while sleeping.

Made of heavy duty, high-density memory foam it’ll provide long lasting comfort for even hours and won’t go flat while you’re using them. Being one of the firmest pillows out there, you’ll notice that it feels extremely relaxing for your back as you place it between your knees.

The contoured C-shape will provide stability and also keeps your hips and spine in ideal alignment while you sleep:

The ComfiLife Pillow’s size will fit most out there searching for a pillow. Its dimensions are 9.8 x 7.9 x 6.3 being around 3.75 at its lowest point. With these sizes I’d say that the the ComfiLife is a bit larger than most knee pillows out there.

The cover pillow cover makes it extra breathable so you probably won’t feel that typical overheating after hours of usage. Needless to say that spills can also be easily washed this way.

Note: If you’re a petite person though, this might be a bit too bulky for you, and would not make your upper leg in level, thus your spine in alignment. You might be better off with the Half-Moon Bolster Pillow.

Since I often feel that these knee pillows slip out of my knees or thighs I payed close attention to this issue when creating the list. I can confirm you that the ComfiLife Pillow won’t slip out that easily thanks to its unique C-shape and firmness.

The ComfiLife Knee Pillow has been of great help to customers suffering from chronic back pain, sciatica, hip pain and knee pain therefore I can heartily recommend it to anyone with these disorders.

Although it needs some getting used-to for some, it’ll be of great help for many out there suffering from the upper dysfunctions.

Cushy Form Back Pain Relief Half-Moon Bolster

Cushy Form is another one among the firmest of orthopedic pillows out there. Thanks to its half-moon shape, this pillow can be used for various sleeping postures: sleeping on your back, side and can be also used for a knee support or as a lumbar support.

Out of the box, it comes squeezed a little bit, but this is the moment when you’ll realize the quality of the Cushy Form. As you pick it up, it starts to pump up and reach its natural shape in some short minutes.

What I like about it the most is the two layer design, making it extra firm. There is a foam layer in the core on top of that, a softer comfort layer:

It features a non-itch, breathing cover providing a soft touch for your hands, and also keeping it fresh at all times.

Since many of you has asked: the cushion cover is washable and also replaceable. Take extra care though not to wash it on too high temperature and with harsh chemicals. Instead wash it with hands in warm water, adding some vinegar and then dry it thoroughly.

Being 4” high and 8” wide, the Cushy Form is among the plainer type of orthopedic pillows. Don’t get mislead though. While being only 4” high, it’s still a tough little boy, being hard to squeeze, giving enough support for your knees after hours (it squeezes only to 3.5” inches from 4”). That’s almost zero difference there.

Compared to the ComfiLife Orthopedic Knee Pillow the only disadvantage is that it can slip out more easily when kept between your knees. Although this is an issue for some, definitely not for everyone.

The Cushy Form can be used in so many ways: as a knee support, to comfort your side sleeping habits, as a lower back support cushion when seated, and a neck pillow when sleeping on your side or your back.

If you’re looking for something to use for multi-purpose, I can definitely recommend the Cushy Form.

Langria Memory Foam Pillow

lower back support pillow for bed

Cushy Foam can be the queen of multipurpose use indeed. But boy, the Langria Memory Foam Pillow shall be the king of variability then.

Sitting in the lower price range, this not-so-famous pillow can make you wonders if you suffer from rheumatoid arthritis, sciatica or just general lower back pain.

Made of environmentally friendly, non-toxic materials the Langria Pillow features a foldable formation. If the width is too high for you, just fold it into two separate parts. This way, you’ll be able to use it as a knee/thigh rest as a side sleeper, or a leg raise as a back sleeper.

The Langria Pillow has a standard size of 9.8 x 5.9 x 7.0 and will definitely fit most customers. However, someone used to larger pillows or with wider legs would find this a bit too small or flat (being its foam not as dense as other pillows’). If you’re one of them, you’d better consider the extra firm ComfiLife Orthopedic Knee pillow instead because it will provide more support for your legs/knees.

It features an extremely soft cover (pleasant velour-type synthetic fiber) but unfortunately not the breathable, bamboo fiber-type of that. You can live with this and it absolutely doesn’t affect its efficiency in relieving pain.

Great thing about the Langria Pillow is that it can be used as a sleeping pillow as well. Just unfold it (or if you prefer higher raise at your neck) or fold it and rest your head on it.

Note: Although Langria states that they avoid using harmful chemicals, you’ll most likely notice a bad odor when opening its box. Make sure to put it outside for 72 hours and the smell will be gone eventually.

Perfect Cloud Double Airflow Memory Foam Pillow for Back Pain

best pillow for lower back support

If you’re looking for something really firm, that can be used either as a standard sleeping pillow, or a knee pillow, then the Perfect Cloud Double Airflow Memory Foam Pillow might be the choice for you.

What will definitely catch an eye is the Perfect Cloud’s exquisite look. From a functionality standpoint, we shouldn’t really care about it, still it’s one of the best looking pillows out there in my opinion.

Being extravagant not only at its appearance, the Perfect Cloud pillow features quality materials from the inside to the outside. As you might have guessed, this 24” x 16” x 4” standard size pillow ventilates air from its very core to out of it, staying cool even after long hours of usage.

The breathable foam inside features small ventilation “shafts” that strike through the whole body of the pillow. You’ll instantly notice air ventilating through it when resting your head on it.

The foam inside is not only breathable, but also extra firm. It allows your head to sink in a little bit, but you won’t need to fear of straining your neck through the night. I’d say that it’s firm enough to even support your knee without too much sinking, but putting your head on it is a pleasure as well.

Another great benefit of the Perfect Cloud Memory Foam Pillow is that it holds up its shape even after years of usage, so you probably won’t need to replace it in years to come.

The only letdown I can come up with is the smell that you receive it with. It’s probably the odor of the anti-bacterial chemical Perfect Cloud treats it with. You’ll need to thoroughly wash it and dry it outside the house.

Being a multi-purpose pillow, the Perfect Cloud can be the choice for side sleepers who suffer from lower back pain. Let alone its cons, it’s still a great buy for the price.

Little Tree Ergonomic Support Pillow

The Little Tree Ergonomic Support Pillow is where pillow innovation excels. Have you seen a pillow that’s produced in three different shapes?

Featuring 3 types of shapes, this foam pillow will be the absolute go-to solution for side sleepers suffering from back pain. If you take a glance at it, you’ll notice right away what I’m talking about here:

orthopedic pillow for side sleepers

It not only offers a healthy posture for your spine, but makes you even more comfortable with its additional armrest.

Whether you choose the Armrest, the Butterfly-wings or the Heart shaped version you can be sure that you’ll have a:

  • High density, extra firm
  • Well-breathing
  • Top-notch pillow for your sleeping pleasure

The Armrest shape provides support for your neck and arms as well. As the closer edge to your neck is pretty high, your spine will maintain straight, correct posture throughout the night. Its dimensions are 24.4″ x 12.2″ x 4.7″.

The Butterfly-wings type doesn’t feature an armrest though, it has raised side-section, giving support to your head from the back and the front as you’re lying on your side. It has a size of 26.0″ x 13.4″ x 4.0″

The Heart-shaped version also features an armrest right next to your head. It’s similar to the Armrest shape, though it comes with a larger pad for your head and arms as well. The exact size of the pillow is: 24.4″ x 12.2″ x 4.7″

As I mentioned, what they have in common is the high density foam. It’s not too firm but isn’t too soft either. I’m sure most of you will find it comfortable to sleep on without any issues.

Making the entire system breathable, there come 16 holes right under the cradle area where you place your head. If you lie down on it, you’ll immediately notice that air comes out of the middle.

The Little Tree pillow comes with 3 cover layers which are all nicely made. The inner layer is irremovable, the middle one can be used on its own and the outer one boasts real exquisite value. In the summer time, feel free to remove this to avoid overheating.

One last benefit of the Little Tree pillow is that it features a free travel bag. This can come handy if you want to make sure you have a better sleep even at a hotel. We all know that even the five star hotels can have horrible pillows in their rooms, right?

The only con to mention is that the Little Tree can lose its shape and even firmness after some months. Although this should be a rare case, Little Tree will give you a full refund if you’re unsatisfied with their product.
